What is Alzheimer´s Disease ?
A disease associated with the brain that causes memory loss and changes in behavior / thinking of an individual.
What causes the disease?
- Two harmful proteins known as amyloid plaques and tau tangles builds up in the brain adversely, affecting the neurons in the brain(neurons are specialized cells in the brain that help in communication, thinking , remembering and learning).
- The probability of a person being affected by the disease increases with age, alongside other risk factors like: genes or even a persons lifestyle.
What are some symptoms ?
- Forgetting recent events or familiar names
- Finding it hard to do every day tasks
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Getting lost in familiar places
Although there is no concrete cure available there are many treatments that can slow down it´s effect.
An example of which is "Cholinesterase Inhibitors", essentially they prevent breakdown of a chemical known as acetylcholine (this chemical is important for memory). An increase in it´s production can help to improve communication between neurons. No treatment stops or cures the disease so far.
Other non-medicinal things a person can incorporate in to daily life that don´t slow down the disease but improves brains function/ reduces risk include :-
-Exercising regularly
- Sleeping well
- Eating brain healthy food : an example of which is blueberry
Interesting facts about Alzheimer´s include:
1) It can start tens of years before the symptoms show up (like memory loss)
2) One of the top ten leading causes of death globally
3) Affects women more than men ( nearly 2/3 of the people diagnosed with Alzheimer´s are women)

Great work !!!! I have a question why does it have more affect on women???
ReplyDeleteWell, there are many social, biological and hormonal factors: including but not limited to Longer life expectancy of women making it more probable for them to have the disease. Or Social factors like stressful and care giving roles may also impact brain health.
