5 science myths that we all fall for

5 Science Myths:🌿 Science is truly an interesting discipline with many fascinating facts..... However, allot of misinformation is spread on the internet and today we are going to debunk some myths 1)  We Only Use 10% of the Brain - That statement itself is utterly wrong, and science itself denies of it. Brain scans show that we virtually, use almost every part of the brain. Each part of the brain has an individual function.    The 10% brain usage  myth is pure fiction. 2) You should drink 8 glasses of water everyday - That´s a myth, everybody is unique in their own way based on: gender, height, age or weight. Therefore, the amount of water that needs to be consumed varies greatly from person to person.  3) Sugar makes kids hyper - Allot of people associate sugar with boosted activity and extraordinary energy. This is wrong as multiple studies have shown that their is no link between sugar and hyperactivity. The excitement is often situational and not caus...

Cystic Fibrosis

What is Cystic fibrosis?
- Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder.
- Caused by mutations in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator gene
-The movement of water and chloride ions across the cell membrane is managed by the CFTR gene.
- It mostly impacts the lungs, pancreas and the digestive system which is inclusive of the stomach.
- When the CFTR gene is not present or does not work properly it can cause an excess of mucus to build up in these organs.
- As, the mucus traps microbes( bacteria, fungi and viruses), it´s build up can potential lead to chronic infections and etcetera over time.

Causes:
- Genetically passed on by the parents.

Symptoms:
- Frequent lung infections
- Difficulty in breathing
- Poor weight despite a balanced diet
- and others

Although there is no cure, many treatments have been found to manage symptoms
- Antibiotics for infections
- Enzyme pills or supplements in order to aid digestion
- Chest physiotherapy in order to loosen mucus in the chest

Some random facts about cystic fibrosis:
- More prevalent in people from European descent.
- People with cystic fibrosis have salty sweat.
- Life expectancy: is over 40 years now, due to the medical advances

As always if you have any questions or would like me to break down such topics / simplify them comment down below. :)

Alzheimer´s Disease Simplified

What is Alzheimer´s Disease ? A disease associated with the brain that causes memory loss and changes in behavior / thinking of an individual. What causes the disease? -  Two harmful proteins known as amyloid  plaques and tau tangles builds up in the brain adversely, affecting the neurons in the brain(neurons are specialized cells in the brain that help in communication, thinking , remembering and learning). - The probability of a person being affected by the disease increases with age, alongside other risk factors like: genes or even a persons lifestyle.  What are some symptoms ? - Forgetting recent events or familiar names - Finding it hard to do every day tasks - Changes in mood or behavior  - Getting lost in familiar places  Although there is no concrete cure available there are many treatments that can slow down it´s effect. An example of which is "Cholinesterase Inhibitors", essentially they prevent breakdown of a chemical known as acetyl...

Can Algae be used as a biofuel?

In a  world  that's continuously  evolving , one of the most  prominent   issues  that's  getting  increasingly  pivotal  for the  world  to solve  is fossil fuels depletion . Although, we've  learned  about the  climate   extremity  in  detail  when young , the  world  seems to  turn  a blind   eye  to the  issue at the  moment. Numerous  renewable methods  like solar, wind and wave  energy   are  being   used  due to their sustainability   benefits . S till , these methods  themselves might  be   too  expensive  or  occasionally ,  have  environmental  consequences . T hus , today  I  bring  to you another  strong   contender  in this  race:   ALGAE What are Algae??? - Algae are a  group  of ...

Protein Folding

Why does the shape of a protein matter? -  To build a brick building you need all bricks to complement each other .....to scaffold upon each other to make a strong structure. Just like that amino acids, which are the small bricks that make protein need to arrange in a certain manner to make certain proteins. How does protein folding occur?😮 As mentioned above proteins are made when amino acids are arranged in a certain manner in long chains. These chains -ofcourse have to fold to make up a protein shapes. This happens spontaneously and due to repulsion between amino acids and watery environments in the cells. Cells help the protein to fold with the help of chaperone proteins ( chaperone of course after the drivers of the process). These proteins help to prevent misfolding . Why does it even matter?🧐 The type of shape that the protein has determines its functions. - It can act as an enzyme. - It build up hair or nails . - It can be used to transport oxygen in the blood thro...
